Human Resources Director, US Methanol LLC

Humility, surrounding herself with positive people, being grateful and charitable and making time to do things that make her happy are the key ingredients to a successful life and career for Angela Hyre, human resources director at US Methanol LLC.

A native of West Virginia, she received bachelor’s degrees in accounting and business management from the University of Charleston (UC). Hyre had an early love for learning, leading and guiding others.

When it came time to choose a major and career path, she thought teaching was a natural fit. It was at her first job as an administrative and admissions assistant that Hyre became interested in the inner workings of a business, everything from the economics to the operations and financial management. This sparked a newfound desire that led her to change her studies from education to business, accounting, finance and human resources. Hyre learned a great deal of valuable lessons in the early stages of her career, such as the importance of how to listen and communicate effectively and to always do more than what is expected.

Hyre has 25 years of experience in accounting and human resources. She served as corporate controller before transitioning to her current role as the human resources director at US Methanol. She plans, coordinates and directs the personnel operations of the company and oversees recruiting, interviewing and hiring functions, along with compliance, compensation, benefits and community relations. As the liaison between management and the employees, she says while the petrochemical industry was new to her, her time working in the venture capital arena gave her the experience needed to fulfill this role.

Before working at US Methanol, Hyre spent time as the controller at Mountaineer Capital LP, managing daily financial operations. Prior to that, she served as the vice president of administration and finance for Paul D. Marshall Architect & Engineers and assistant controller at NeuMedia Inc.

Hyre has a rich history of community activism, mentoring and volunteering. As a proud UC alumna, Hyre serves on the president’s advisory council.

“Giving back is important because whether it’s a little or a lot, it makes an impact, and I care about making a difference,” she says. “It is with gratitude and appreciation that I give back through ongoing involvement to the school that encouraged me to make a difference.”

Hyre is proud of the work UC does in the community and for its students and is thankful to be a part of it.

For over 13 years, Hyre has volunteered and contributed to many causes, such as the YWCA Resolve’s Girls Night Out event, American Heart Asso­ciation’s Charleston Heart Walk and Read Aloud West Virginia.

“I’ve been a contributor, volunteer and chairperson on various committees for YWCA Girls Night Out for more than 12 years. I got involved because domestic violence is a real and growing problem. I am an advocate of women empowering women,” she says.

From an early age, Hyre recalls a curiosity to learn everything, so she read a lot.

“I believe reading is the core of all things. The more you read, the more you know and learn. This opens up more possibilities throughout life,” she says.

As a donor, volunteer, treasurer and board member, Read Aloud is an organization that is very dear to her.

Hyre says choosing to be positive and confident is how she got to where she is today. Because of this mindset, she has been able to overcome obstacles.

“Guilt and finding a work-life balance after I had my daughter—it was that insidious feeling of not doing enough as a parent, not doing everything right and having unrealistic expectations of being able to do it all and have it all,” she says.

With a successful career, strong community relationships, faithful friendships and a wonderful daughter, Hyre proves she can have it all in her own way.

Deeply rooted family ties, along with the friendly, passionate people in West Virginia keep Hyre living, working and playing in the Mountain State.
