“Lighting the Way for Education,” a communication campaign presented by Mountaineer Montessori School (MMS), has been honored with a Golden Achievement Award by the National School Public Relations Association.  The award recognizes exemplary communications on behalf of educational institutions.  MMS is the only private school in the nation to earn the award this year.

The campaign highlighted the Montessori approach to education as a model for enhancing academic performance and preparing both public and private school students for a 21st century workplace.  It was the only Golden Achievement-winning campaign that was conceived by and primarily implemented through volunteer and pro-bono assistance.

In June, MMS received four Crystal Awards from the West Virginia Public Relations Association.  The Crystal Award is the state’s top public relations recognition.  MMS was honored for outstanding efforts in the community relations, integrated communications, crisis communications and news article categories.

MMS, 308 20th Street, is an independent school offering a rich academic program in an authentic Montessori environment to children ages 3-12.   Children enjoy a full arts curriculum, after-school program, on-site computer lab, reading specialists, Spanish and physical education at the University of Charleston pool and gymnasium.   The school was founded in 1976 by education pioneer Mary McKown.  Tuition assistance is available to families based upon financial need.

The mission of the National School Public Relations Association, based in Rockville, Md., is “to advance education through responsible public relations and communication that leads to success for all students.”  Since 1935, NSPRA has been providing school communication training, products and services to school leaders throughout the United States, Canada and the U.S. Department of Defense Dependents Schools worldwide.
