There’s a little known facility in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia that has been in operation for more than 60 years. The complex is known as the Allegany Ballistics Laboratory (ABL) and is located approximately 12 miles northeast of Keyser, West Virginia. ABL was established in 1943 to produce ammunition to support American troops during World War II.

In his 2003 book on business ethics entitled “There’s No Such Thing as Business Ethics,” John C. Maxwell wrote, “Most people are disgusted with the state of ethics in America. They are sick of dishonesty and unethical dealings.” While most people can agree with this sentiment, agreement on a solution is an altogether different issue. The Brownfields: A Project of Revitalization

Across the nation, in both urban and rural settings, public officials, community leaders and developers are grappling with the challenges associated with brownfields—abandoned or underused and possibly contaminated industrial and commercial properties. These properties include formerly thriving industrial areas, gas stations and drycleaners, closed mines and timber mills and idle shopping centers and office buildings, many darkened in the current economic downturn. As many as 1 million brownfield sites may exist nationwide.
