Concord University is celebrating Earth Day 2015 on Wednesday, April 22 with several activities.

Grounds clean-up will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at various locations on the Athens campus, including the residence halls. To sign up to help or for more information contact Residence Life Staff at 304-384-5231.

A seed giveaway will be held beginning at 11 a.m. in the Student Center lobby outside of the Libby Alvis Dining Hall. Free vegetable and flower seeds will be available while supplies last.

Concord’s Bonner Scholars are inviting all Concord students to paint flower pots at the Bonner House on Earth Day. The activity will take place from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and again from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Bonner Program Director Kathy Ball said that participants may keep their painted flower pots or leave them to later be shared with residents of local retirement and nursing facilities. Ball said flowers are being provided by the Bonner program for the flower pots that will be gifted to the facilities.

Bonner Scholars will also be conducting door-to-door recycling from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the residence halls. Ball said the activity is intended to promote recycling with the students and to remind them that recycling bins are available in the residence halls.

Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students Marjie Flanigan said the University is continuing sustainability and “green” initiatives already in place including campus-wide recycling and eliminating trays in the dining hall to reduce energy and water consumption. The campus community is also encouraged to turn off lights when leaving a room to save energy, and unplug unused electrical appliances, including chargers for electronic devices, when not in use, she said.

Students from Concord University’s Beckley campus are volunteering again this year with the Raleigh County Solid Waste Authority’s annual Earth Day Go for the Green10K and 5K races on Saturday, April 25, 2015. The students are also sponsoring a Fun Run for children. The competitions will be held at the Woodrow Wilson High School track in Beckley.

This is the fourth year Concord students have assisted with the event according to Concord sociology instructor Lori Pace.
